I turned 50 last fall. My partner rescheduled a planned trip to New York to coincide with a book signing by one of my all-time favorite authors, bought a hardback of her newest book, and got her to sign it to me. He could have spent ten times more on a conventional gift and it wouldn't have meant nearly as much to me, not just because of the book, but because the effort and care he put into it indicates how well he knows my passions and weaknesses.
